A Parent’s Guide to the Newport County Youth Chorus: What to Expect

Welcome to the Newport County Youth Chorus (NCYC)! If you're considering enrolling your child, you probably have questions about what to expect. This guide will walk you through everything you need to know, from rehearsals to performances and the benefits of joining our vibrant singing community.

Four smiling children stand together at a table with their arms raised in excitement, set against a backdrop featuring a patriotic wall hanging and posters, representing the joy and camaraderie of participating in a youth community program like the Newport County Youth Chorus.

What is the Newport County Youth Chorus?

NCYC is more than just a place for kids to sing. It’s a supportive community where young singers develop confidence, teamwork, and a lifelong love of music. We welcome children from across Newport County, no matter their musical experience.

Our goal? To help kids shine while fostering a love for music and community.

Who Can Join the Chorus?

NCYC is open to children in grades 1 through 6. Whether your child has been singing since they could talk or is just discovering their voice, they’ll feel right at home here.

We offer:

  • Prep Chorus: For younger singers in grades 1-3

  • Pre-Teen Chorus: For older singers in grades 4-6

What Happens During Rehearsals?

Rehearsals are fun, structured, and interactive. Here’s what a typical session looks like:

  1. Warm-Ups: Fun vocal exercises to get their voices ready.

  2. Skill Building: Learning key elements of singing, like pitch, rhythm, and harmony.

  3. Repertoire Practice: Singing songs chosen to inspire and challenge young voices.

Rehearsals are held weekly and last 60 minutes.

Performances and Events

One of the most exciting parts of joining NCYC is performing! Throughout the year, your child will have opportunities to showcase their skills at community events, Newport Sings concerts, and more.

Performances help build confidence and give kids a sense of accomplishment. Don’t worry—nerves are normal, and we’re here to help every step of the way!

What Are the Benefits of Joining?

Beyond learning to sing, kids in NCYC gain skills that will benefit them for life:

  • Teamwork: Singing in a group teaches collaboration.

  • Confidence: Performing in front of an audience helps kids step out of their comfort zones.

  • Discipline: Regular rehearsals instill a sense of commitment and focus.

  • Community: They’ll make friends and feel connected to something bigger than themselves.

What Do Parents Need to Know?

  • Cost: There is no cost to participate in NCYC programs.

  • Attendance: Consistent attendance is key for group success, so we encourage families to prioritize rehearsals and performances.

  • Communication: You’ll receive updates about schedules, events, and any changes through email.
